Etching Copper - Printmaking course

€420.00

Six sessions of hands-on introduction to working with Copper in Etching/Intaglio

Printmaking is perhaps one of the most varied and versatile media of the visual arts. It takes as many forms as the artists and inventors that have developed and refined its various techniques along the centuries.

Traditionally, Copper plates have been used to work in Etching.

With the Industrial Revolution, metals such as Zinc were introduced into Etching as cheap and “fast” alternatives. It is however customary when specialising in Printmaking to work initially with Copper, learn all its variations and understand the processes before moving on to other materials.

In 6 printmaking sessions, we will learn the craft to traditionally handling and preparing copper plates, etching lines, preparing for aquatint while also adding a few experimental techniques to our toolbox.

Designed for beginners and those with some experience, the aim of this course is to give you a hands-on and thorough introduction to working with copper in Etching both in line and tone (aquatint).

This course requires a basic knowledge of drawing/image production skills (photography, collage...etc) and a love for process and learning.

We will start on Wednesday 8th January until Wednesday 12th February.

It is mandatory to attend all sessions as part of the course!

Depending on the number of participants the dates are relatively flexible and we can reschedule to fit everyone’s plan. The sessions will take place either Wednesdays from 16:30 - 21:00 or if needed on Saturday morning.

Provided by the studio: All tools are provided (burnishers, scarpers, dry point needles, roulette etc) as well as solvents, acids and inks.
